At Element Biosciences, the mission is to empower the scientific community with freedom and flexibility to accelerate the collective impact on humanity. They have built a highly efficient, product-driven organization focused on scientific integrity, collegiality, and openness.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a Scientist, Histology to join our R&D team. This role supports the development of a next-generation multi-omics product for tissue samples, including formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) and fresh frozen (FF) specimens. You will lead tissue preparation workflows and contribute to the optimization of protocols that enable robust downstream molecular and imaging assays.
This position reports to the VP, Biochemistry and is based at our San Diego headquarters.
What You'll Do
- Lead Tissue Processing: Manage the preparation of FFPE and fresh frozen tissues for assay development and research.
- Workflow Design: Develop and optimize histology workflows specific to Element’s platform to support multi-omics and spatial biology.
- Precision Sectioning: Perform tissue fixation, embedding, microtomy, cryosectioning, and slide preparation.
- Advanced Staining: Execute routine (H&E) and advanced (IHC, IF) staining protocols.
- Troubleshooting & QC: Evaluate morphology, identify artifacts, and establish quality control assays for blocks and sections.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner with molecular biology, imaging, and bioinformatics teams to integrate workflows into broader product development.
- Instrumentation: Operate and maintain microtomes, cryostats, automated tissue processors, and staining systems.
- Mentorship: Provide technical guidance to research associates and junior scientists.
What You'll Bring
Education & Experience
- PhD (Preferred); or an MS with 4–6 years of experience; or a BS with 5–7 years of relevant hands-on histology experience.
- HT or HTL certification (ASCP) is required.
- Core Expertise: Deep knowledge of FFPE processing, fresh frozen handling, microtomy, and cryostat operation.
Technical Skills
